The wrong tractor turns a capable attachment into a disappointment
Every Canadian summer of land clearing produces the same complaint from someone who bought on width alone. The machine bogs, the rotor never holds speed, and the work crawls. A Forestry brush mulcher is one of the few attachments where the tractor behind it matters as much as the tool itself.

The heavy rotor inside a brush mulcher stores energy as it spins, and that stored energy is what carries the teeth through a stem rather than stalling on it. The tractor is not cutting the wood so much as continually topping up that reserve.
This is why engine power alone is a poor guide. What matters is whether the tractor can restore rotor speed between bites, because a rotor that never quite recovers leaves a ragged finish and a machine that feels underpowered no matter what the label says.
A category two hitch is part of the specification
The three point hitch on a tractor in this power class is a category two, with larger pins and wider spacing than the category one fitting found on compact machines. An attachment has to match that standard to mount at all.
It matters beyond simply fitting. The hitch carries the entire weight of the head out behind the tractor, and a category two linkage is what handles both that mass and the shock loads that come back through it when teeth meet something solid.
The driveline is where mismatches show up first
Power reaches a brush mulcher through a power take off shaft turning at a standard speed, and that shaft has to be the right length for the tractor it serves. Too long and it bottoms out on turns, too short and it can pull apart under articulation.
A contractor near Pembroke measured his hitch geometry before the first pass and cut the shaft to suit, which is ten minutes that prevents the most common and most expensive failure on a newly mounted brush mulcher.
Carbide teeth are a consumable with real economics
The cutting teeth are tipped with tungsten carbide because plain steel would round over within hours in ground-level work full of grit and stone. They are designed to be unbolted and replaced individually rather than nursed. Budgeting for teeth from the outset is part of owning a brush mulcher rather than a surprise later.
Treating them as stock rather than spares is what keeps a machine productive. Worn teeth force the tractor to work harder for a poorer finish, and that hidden cost in fuel and time usually exceeds the price of the teeth themselves.

Attachment buyers are reading driveline specifications more closely
As tractors and attachments are increasingly bought separately and from different suppliers, the matching has shifted onto the owner, and horsepower ranges and hitch categories now get checked before price does. Width still sells the machine, but the driveline is what decides whether it performs.
