The 2027 university cycle is already live. UCAS forms are open, some admissions tests are starting, and the first main cut-off is in October. Students who need personal statement support or wider university application guidance should start now.
A calm start gives them time to compare courses, find useful examples and work on weak grades. It also cuts the risk of errors caused by a last-minute rush.
The 2027 UCAS Dates That Matter
UCAS opened its 2027 application on 12 May 2026. Students can fill it in now, but they cannot submit a full application until 1 September. The official UCAS timetable gives these key dates:
- 1 October 2026: Most conservatoire music applications are due. Dates for dance, drama and musical theatre may differ.
- 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time: The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and veterinary science courses.
- 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time: The equal-consideration deadline for most other degree courses.
- 25 February 2027: UCAS Extra opens. Eligible students who used all five choices and hold no offers may use it.
- 30 June 2027, 18:00 UK time: Applications are still sent to universities, but equal consideration is not guaranteed. Later applications enter Clearing.
- 2 July 2027: Clearing opens, and available course places begin to appear.
- 12 August 2027: The JCQ timetable lists GCE results day, which includes A levels.
Equal consideration does not promise an offer. It means a university must assess each on-time application on the same basis. Schools may set an earlier date so staff can check the form and add a reference.

Pick the Course Before the Campus
Start with what you will study, not a league table or city. Compare core modules, optional topics, types of exams, and work placements. Check if the course has the approval needed for a chosen career. Then weigh up rent, travel and campus life.
Choose up to five courses you would be glad to take. One can be a bold choice, but the list should fit your grades and needs. A course may also ask for a test, interview, portfolio or written work.
This is urgent for medicine and dentistry. The 2026 UCAT test window runs from 13 July to 24 September. Booking closes at 15:00 UK time on 16 September. Other tests use their own dates, so check each course page.
Plan for the Three Statement Questions
The UCAS personal statement is no longer one long essay. It asks why the student chose the subject, how their studies have helped, and what they have done outside class. The full limit is 4,000 characters, including spaces. Each answer needs at least 350 characters.
Admissions staff read all three answers as one piece, so avoid repeated points. Good personal statement support should draw out a student’s own ideas, not write the answers for them.
A strong example has three parts. Say what you did, what you learnt and why it matters. Naming a book or placement adds little on its own. Explain how it changed your view.
Write a first draft now, then leave time to edit. Cut vague praise, long openings and claims with no proof. Each example should show interest, skill or a clear link to the subject.
Sort the Reference and Finance Early
Ask a referee well before the school deadline. Share your course goal and any useful facts they may not know.
Students who normally live in England may use the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement for an eligible course starting on or after 1 January 2027. Applications will open in September 2026. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run separate schemes. Also check grants, bursaries, rent, travel and course costs.
